Wide Open: Elements of Visual Connection

Wide Open is a photography guide that invites you to photograph the world around you without textbook instruction. It's a collection of visual elements of photography that have helped me as a professional photographer since I opened my first business in 2009.

I didn't do well with conventional instruction and guidance, and working on the technical side of photography without learning how to tell a story didn't feel right to me. This ebook is for photographers at any level, even people who don't think of themselves as photographers. It explores different elements, like light, movement, and connection, and how to incorporate them into photographs along with examples.

If you've tried courses and workshops and technical guidance before and have felt frustrated, you might like this approach. It's more like experimenting with ingredients in the kitchen than following a specific recipe. I think the exercises and things to consider in Wide Open help people build skills in their entire approach to photography instead of just the technical stuff.

These are things I continue to use every time I pick up my camera. The information in this ebook is the same stuff I'm thinking about as a professional - I don't think I'll ever outgrow the need for these reminders.
