The Optional Self follows ordinary life as convenience gradually assumes more of its decisions, effort, memory, and uncertainty. Routes arrive, preferences are anticipated, choices are curated, and the small difficulties that once demanded attention quietly disappear. Nothing dramatic is taken away; the essay asks instead what becomes of the self when fewer and fewer moments require its full participation.
