🖋️ Artist Statement
I have been painting since the late 1980s, beginning my career in Alaska as a theater set painter for the Kenai Peninsula Borough and receiving the 1990 Kenai Art Guild Scholarship Award.
From 2001 to 2016 I lived in Japan where I informally learned hagaki-e (葉書絵) postcard painting, and I have been based in South Korea since 2016. Each place has shaped how I experience the world and translate it into art.
My work is drawn from a 25+ year archive of travel photography across the Pacific Rim. I primarily work in miniature formats—ACEOs, postcard-sized works and small zines—to reduce material waste and focus on immediacy of observation.
I use regionally-procured materials including Kuretake Gansai Tambi, ShinhanArt, and Mijello Mission Gold.
This work exists as both image and record: preserving places in transition due to climate, development, and time. -RKG
