This Winter Value Grid Drawing resource gives students in grades 7 to 10 structured practice with observation, proportion, value, form and realistic drawing. Students copy a black and white winter photograph square by square into a blank grid, paying close attention to lights, darks, edges, textures and subtle value shifts.

The photographs are real winter photographs taken by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic), not clip art, so students practice drawing from real reference the way artists do. It suits art teachers, classroom teachers, substitute teachers and homeschool families, and it can also work for some advanced grade 5 and 6 students who already have experience with shading and observational drawing.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for winter art lessons, value and shading units, observational drawing practice, realism lessons, art centers, sub plans, independent studio work and homeschool art. Each page can be a one page skill builder, a weekly drawing routine, or part of a booklet students complete over several classes.

The grids and reference photos are already prepared, so students don't need to draw their own grids and you don't need to hunt for suitable photos. That leaves more class time for teaching value, contrast, texture and how light defines form.
