The 18th Variation is the most famous and beloved section of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 for piano and orchestra. Composed in 1934, it is a sweeping, romantic "love theme" that famously inverts Paganini's original melody. Rachmaninoff himself acknowledged its immense appeal, once quipping, "This one is for my agent".
