In this Pineapple Zentangle Art Lesson, students draw a pineapple with decorative flowers, divide the fruit into sections and fill each one with zentangle-inspired line patterns. Washable markers, watercolor-style blending, wax crayons and paint bring the bright summer artwork to life.

It works well for Grades 3 to 6 in elementary art classrooms, homeschool art and creative drawing time. The structure is easy to follow, students build drawing confidence and creative problem solving, and the finished pineapples make a cheerful bulletin board or hallway display.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students practice zentangle-style line pattern drawing, doodle design, watercolor and marker blending and sectioned composition, using the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, space, texture, form and value. They sketch the pineapple and flowers, add dots across the fruit and connect them into geometric sections, fill each section with a different pattern, then brush water over washable marker to create paint-like washes for the leaves and flowers.

Project the step-by-step slides, demonstrate the drawing live, or give students the printed guides for independent work. It suits summer and end-of-year art, pattern design lessons and sub plans.
