Even in the dark, there are pops of color and brightness. The Moonlight on the Water Shawl pairs a brightly colored variegated with a solid to create a highly textured shawl that’s the perfect pop of joy when things get dark. The stitch pattern uses slightly more advanced techniques, but it’s mindless with minimal counting and it’s designed so you only need to weave in two ends per color.

Sample

Sample used OMG Yarn Edelweiss (fingering weight; 75% sw merino/25% nylon; 450yds/100g), 338yds/75g in Dark Water (color A), 405yds/90g in Together (color B)

Thanks to OMG Yarn for providing the yarn for the pattern sample!

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern calls for 833yds/761m/185g fingering weight yarn total; 383yds/350m/85g of color A and 450yds/411m/100g of color B.

The sample used fingering weight yarn, but the pattern works well in anything from a fingering to worsted weight.

Color B can be any color style, from highly variegated (as shown in the sample) to speckled, solid, or tonal. The stitch pattern also pairs perfectly with gradient or self-striping yarns. For color B, choose a color that pairs well with color A - it’s helpful to have some level of contrast so the texture pops. Color B is worked until you run out of yarn, so it can be worked to any yardage. You’ll need approximately slightly less of color B as compared to color A. The pattern works best with a yarn that shows texture well.

Skills Required

Overview of the Finished Object

The Moonlight on the Water Shawl is a top-down crescent shawl that’s straight across the top with sides that curve upwards to create wings. The body is textured with narrow stripes of color and the edging features large triangles.

Printing

Both a regular and printer friendly version are available! The regular version includes large photos on the first page and the last two pages, so print accordingly. The printer-friendly version has only one photo on the cover page, and less spacing so the pattern takes up fewer pages. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.

Screen Reader Compatibility

The main pattern pdf is designed to be screen reader compatible. The text is all in one column and headers are formatted according to the style sheet. The pattern is written out completely and the images have descriptive alt text.
