Yesterday’s shape is still writhing; do you hear the body bending underneath the passage of time? In Burning of Absence, Jessica Thiru’s collection explores a vast, insoluble loneliness in all its forms. Who awakens from the sound of their own desire? What becomes of a desire ever-nourishing on the remnants of breaking? This collection steps into the mouth of grief, loneliness, memory and many ephemeral homes. By balancing these universal themes with personal anecdotes, Thiru’s collection combines stark imagery and honest storytelling to create a bold and confronting narrative. As a first foot into the writing world, this chapbook serves as a quiet rebellion against the seclusion that molds the lives of us as a collective. Burning of Absence is a warm voice into the big dark.

Burning of Absence is a courageous, deeply evocative debut. It feels like holding someone’s open wounds in your hands; messy, devastating, and unforgettable. It will resonate most with readers who value confessional poetry, raw honesty, and social critiqu

Strengths.
Raw Emotion & Honesty: The writing bleeds with truth grief, trauma, survival, and the inheritance of pain are all laid bare without softening. It doesn’t try to make the reader comfortable, which makes it powerful.

Imagery & Language: The metaphors are vivid (“a body dead on a tiled floor is still a loud experience,” “justice is just a privilege”), pulling readers into an almost cinematic experience.

Thematic Depth: It captures generational wounds, womanhood under violence, and the haunting duality of absence and survival. It’s not just personal it speaks to collective experiences of women, families, and silenced grief.

Structure: The book moves between poems, journal-like entries, and confessional letters. This variety makes it feel intimate, like being inside someone’s mind across years.

Weaknesses.
Relentless heaviness: While its weight is part of its strength, the lack of reprieve can overwhelm the reader. There are almost no moments of light or healing to balance the despair, which could limit accessibility.

Density of Metaphor: Some pieces are layered so thick with imagery that clarity can get lost. A few poems risk alienating readers who aren’t used to unpacking abstract writing.

Cohesion: While all the pieces connect under grief, trauma, and survival, the narrative arc is more emotional than structural. Readers looking for progression or resolution might feel stranded in the cycle of pain.
Overall it's a bold, memorable and commendable debut. It may be overwhelming at times as it leans heavily on the trauma but it is definitely worth the read.
