.SF2 soundfonts are a great way of distributing sounds because there are so many virtual instruments and DAWs that can load them. Reason's NN-XT sample instrument and Bitwig's Sampler Instrument are just two examples, and there are also downloadable VST instruments many of which are free downloads including TX16Wx, Sfrorzando, and Plogue.

The .SF2 soundfont standard 'wraps' all the raw samples alongside tuning, key mapping, velocity mapping, envelope and other parameters into a single 'ready to play' file so no further editing is required, although many soundfont instruments offer synth style parameters for you to transform the original soundfont instrument.
