The player can build three types of characters: a Warrior, an Archer or a Sorcerer. The three are very similar in that there aren't any restrictions on spells, weapons, or equipment. The only differences are the different focuses of each of them.
The Warrior has great strength and vitality, but low magic and average dexterity. The Archer has great magic and dexterity, but low vitality and strength. And the Sorcerer has high magic and dexterity, but low strength and vitality. Each choice implies a different game strategy, but it is said that the Warrior is better for beginners, since he starts out very strong, but does not become so powerful at the end of his career.
The Archer would be for intermediate players, as it remains constant throughout the game. The Mage, on the other hand, would only be suitable for advanced players, as he starts very weak and develops throughout the game, to become the most powerful of the three.
The History of the Sanctuary

On the side of Hell there are the 3 primordial evils (brothers) at the top: Diablo - Lord of Terror; Mephisto - Lord of Hatred; and Baal - Lord of Destruction.
For ages the war between Heaven and Hell followed with many victories and conquests for both sides, which always left the conflict immobile, without a clear winner, in what was an eternal war.
An angel named Inarius, who served under Tyrael, had had many successes in battle, but witnessed countless acts of brutality, and came to the conclusion that the conflict was unfair and that he would no longer take part in the conflict, and set out on a quest. of other angels and demons who sought to escape the endless war, in order to come together for a new beginning, always focusing on ending the war between Heaven and Hell.
In battle, however, he was overthrown, wounded, and captured. He complained that he just wanted an end to the war between the sides and was freed by his captor, Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, who told him they would meet again one day.
Lilith suffered greatly from her father's hatred, and like Inarius, wanted an opportunity to rebel. The two teamed up and fell in love and gathered a huge following. Inarius and his followers gained access to the Worldstone, located in the Pandemonium Fortress, there they altered its frequency and dimensional alignment and reduced it to a much smaller size. In this new world, Inarius created Mount Arreat as protection for the Worldstone, and from there the world was formed. At this moment Inarius created a bond between himself and the Worldstone, becoming by far the most powerful being in the world.

Por eras a guerra entre entre Céu e Inferno seguiu com muitas vitórias e conquistas para ambos os lados, o que sempre deixou o conflito imóvel, sem um claro vencedor, no que era uma guerra eterna.
Um anjo chamado Inarius, que servia sob o comando de Tyrael, havia tido muitos sucessos em batalha, porém presenciado inúmeros atos de brutalidade, e chegou a conclusão que o conflito era injusto e que ele não tomaria mais parte no conflito, e partiu um busca de outros anjos e demônios que buscassem escapar da guerra sem fim, com o intuito de se juntarem por um novo começo, focando sempre em acabar com a guerra entre Céu e Inferno.
Numa batalha, porém ele foi derrubado, ferido e capturado. Ele reclamou que apenas queria o fim da guerra entre os lados e foi liberto por sua captora, Lilith, filha de Mephisto, que lhe disse que eles se reencontrariam um dia. Lilith sofreu muito com o ódio de seu pai, e como Inarius, queria uma oportunidade para se rebelar.
Os dois se uniram e se apaixonaram e juntaram diversos seguidores. Inarius e seus seguidores conseguiram acesso à Worldstone, localizada na Fortaleza Pandemonium, lá eles alteraram sua frequência e alinhamento dimensional e a reduziram a um tamanho muito menor. A partir dela, Inarius e seus seguidores formaram um mundo chamado de Santuário.
