Starting a government course with very little ready to teach? This Unit 1 pack gives you short readings, student pages, and answer guidance to begin with the foundations: why government exists, who holds power, how power is limited, and the ideas behind the American founding.

The work stays manageable. Students use notes templates, comparison charts, graphic organizers, matching, short responses, and a few supported applications. Open and guided notes options let you choose the amount of structure your class needs.

What you receive

46 unique unit pages: 28 student pages and 18 teacher pages.

Your download includes the full unit PDF, separate student and teacher PDFs, an editable Word copy, and a two-page Start Here guide. The split files and Word copy repeat the unit; they are not additional activities.

Teacher support

A print map and suggested ten-day route help you choose what to assign. Completed notes, answer guidance, teaching points, and common errors support instruction.

Notes alternatives cover the same content; assign one version. The learning check samples core ideas rather than every part of the unit.

Classroom fit

Designed for general high school, with difficulty toward the accessible end. The suggested route assumes approximately 45–55 minute periods; adjust for your class.

Students need printed pages and a pencil. Coloring is optional. The included materials do not require a textbook, slideshow, paid student account, or student internet access.

Standards reference

Developed with the Texas United States Government TEKS as a reference: §113.44, adopted 2022. The included map identifies introductory or practice work toward 1A–C, 6A–B, 6F, 11A, 12A–B, and 20A.

This is a unit-level resource, not a claim of complete course or standards coverage. The topics can also support introductory government classes outside Texas.

Before you buy

The free Types of Government Worksheets lesson is drawn from R03, Who has power. Those student pages and the teacher key are already included here.

This pack covers Unit 1 foundations; it is not a full government course. Slides are not included. Review the sample pages to check the reading level and activity style for your students.
