Recovery Revelations: Anorexia and Recovery through the Lens of Being a Soul in a Human Body
While this book is written to an audience that has experienced an eating disorder, is in the midst of an eating disorder, or is in the midst of recovery from an eating disorder, it can truly be encouragement for everyone! Yes, it can also be valuable to individuals walking with a loved one through an eating disorder or recovery. BUT even outside of those folks? This book can still be transformative. That’s by design, Sweet Souls.
I wrote this book, first, to shine light on eating disorder symptoms that aren’t talked about very often. I wrote this to help people not feel alone or like they’ve lost their minds (how I felt during my eating disorder). I wrote this to be an antidote to the (totally unnecessary but sometimes very real) embarrassment, shame, and confusion that can come along with being in the midst of an eating disorder. I wrote this to be a source of hope, freedom, healing, and education. I wrote this to shine a light on alternative perspectives (on eating disorders, healing, the human body, life in general…)! So that everyone is free to choose. Because there is ALWAYS another way.
In this book, I outline what is known as the adapted-to-flee-famine theory of anorexia nervosa development, a theory developed by clinical psychologist Dr. Shan Guisinger. This theory posits the possibility that modern day restrictive eating disorders are the result of genetic responses passed down from our ancestors who may have had to survive times of famine. In response to an energy deficit, these genes from our ancestors “turn on,” leading to the development of restrictive eating disorder thoughts, behaviors, and habits. To the body and brain, it’s all about surviving a perceived famine.
After explaining the theory, I walk you through my story, the symptoms I experienced (and how they relate back to the theory), and my perspectives on recovery/healing.
All throughout, I weave in chats about Who We Are as Souls, the essentialness of spirituality when it comes to healing (and all of life!), how free we are to choose our paths from infinite possibilities, and so much more! This is why I say this book can be encouragement for absolutely anyone. I wrote it with the intent of it transforming your life, somehow, some way. It is indeed a book about eating disorder development, my story, and eating disorder recovery, but it is also a vessel for spiritual teaching and alternative perspectives to help you live an amazing life that is 100% available to you. Right now.
