Movement Map & Memoir

Two printable activities for noticing movement in the world and in the mind.

As part of the Curiosity Collection, these companion resources invite you to explore the idea of flux: movement, change and the things that never remain entirely still.

The Movement Map helps you observe a place in motion. Choose a comfortable location, watch the movement around you and use marks, lines and symbols to capture what you see. You can follow the guide and key provided, or create your own visual language for recording movement.

The Movement Memoir turns your attention inwards. It invites you to observe your own thoughts and capture them in writing without trying to control or organise them. You can then consider whether your writing is closer to stream of consciousness or direct interior monologue.

Together, the activities explore two kinds of movement:

  • A place in flux — movement observed and recorded visually.
  • A mind in flux — thoughts observed and recorded through writing.

What’s included:

  • A printable Movement Map activity sheet
  • A visual key offering different ways to represent movement
  • A printable Movement Memoir activity sheet
  • A brief introduction to stream of consciousness and direct interior monologue
  • Space to record each activity

You will need

  • A printed copy of the resource
  • A pen or pencil
  • A comfortable place to observe
  • A timer - optional

No specialist knowledge or artistic writing ability is required. The activities are designed to be approached experimentally: you can follow the suggested methods, adapt them or develop your own way of recording what you notice.

These resources accompany Bookfordshire's Curiosity Collection YouTube lesson Flux: Things In Motion, but can also be used independently as short, offline observation and writing activities.
