The Sugar Plum Shawl is a delicate dance, with stitches that dip and curtsy throughout. The pattern uses only basic stitches, but they combine to create a work of art, for a gorgeous project that is accessible even to a newer crocheter. The pattern is designed specifically to highlight the beauty of a hand dyed gradient and to showcase gradual color changes. It features a 12-row repeat and the also includes instructions for ending on any row in the repeat so you can use up every scrap of yarn.

The pattern is written in US terms. It includes both written and charted instructions.

Gauge

8 rows = 4”/10cm measured down the spine. Gauge is worked flat and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. Gauge may vary based on how you block. Gauge is not essential to this pattern as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily adjusted in length and width. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern is specifically designed to highlight a gradient, and includes instructions for using up every scrap of yarn. It looks equally amazing in a self-striping with long stripes or a solid or tonal. It generally breaks up pooling in a variegated yarn, but the variegation tends to obscure some of the pattern details.

A single 100g skein of fingering is enough to make a shawlette measuring ~41”/100cm across. 150g of fingering is enough for a full size shawl measuring 51.5”/131cm across. The shawl can easily be made larger with more yardage.

The samples shown are fingering weight, but the pattern looks amazing in anything from a laceweight to a worsted.
