TUSCALOOSA – THE LAST GIANT

Long before the United States was even a dream. Long before Alabama had a name on any map. There was a world few Europeans had ever seen—a world of sprawling river valleys, fortified towns, and platform mounds rising from the forest like earthen cathedrals. This was the Mississippian world, a civilization of farmers and warriors, traders and temple-builders, stretching from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. And at its southern edge, along the banks of the Black Warrior River, there stood a chiefdom ruled by a man whose name would outlive his kingdom. His name was Tuskaloosa. In the autumn of 1540, a Spanish army led by the conquistador Hernando de Soto marched into his territory—hungry, desperate, and accustomed to conquest. They had already witnessed the fall of the Inca and the Aztec. They believed no native ruler could stand before them. But when they reached the paramount village of Atahachi and looked up at the figure seated silently atop the great mound, every one of them stopped. Because the man looking down at them was not ordinary. He was, by every account they left behind, a giant. Not a metaphor. Not a myth. A man so tall that battle-hardened soldiers, men who had crossed oceans and survived massacres, reached for the word gigante.
