Sunshine In My Pocket is the first of what I hope to be many projects designed specifically with the intention of raising funds for the Glut-1 Deficiency Foundation. All proceeds from the sale of this pattern will go directly to the foundation. Glut-1 Deficiency Syndrome is typically caused by a genetic mutation that causes the body to produce insufficient amounts of the protein responsible for carrying glucose to the brain, leading to seizures, developmental delays and movement disorders along with a variety of other symptoms. This cause is near and dear to my heart as my daughter was born with Glut-1 Deficiency Syndrome.

The problem with rare diseases is that they’re rare, there are only about 500 diagnosed cases of the disease at this time and families are scattered all over the world. This is where the work of the Glut-1 Deficiency Foundation is so important. Along with helping to fund important research and spreading awareness of the disease within the medical community, they work to help families to connect through conferences and fundraising drives. We finally had the opportunity this summer to attend a conference and I was almost overwhelmed by the support, the sense of community and the joy that our Glut-1 families can bring to a party. Being in a hotel for a weekend with everyone was like bathing in pure sunshine and it was during that weekend that this shawl unfolded in my head. Denim blue for rare diseases and sunshine yellow for the joy. Life with my daughter has been a roller coaster ride for sure but wouldn’t trade it for anything. She is the sunshine in my pocket everyday.

Sunshine In My Pocket is a vortex shaped asymmetrical triangle shawl that starts from one tip and grows with increases on each row. It is worked up with loads of squishy garter before moving on to a section of stranded colorwork for the star stitches. It finishes with rows of simple eyelet lace. If you are new to stranded color work don’t be intimidated! I’ve included tips to help you through that section.
