Chapter One
A Long Curious Monologue Unfolds
“A line of soldiers twisted its way across the surface of a frozen lake with the hard, determined movements of men committed to a duty. Their faces were hidden behind the turned-up collars of dark blue coats and their gun barrels pointed towards the sky like the exposed spine of a wounded animal. The only sound was the wind and the crunching of snow under boots. Three times Raven circled overhead to warn them of the danger, but not being wise to the ways of Raven, they ignored his caws and down they went, disappearing through the ice without a word.

The day of the lesson, I saw deer in the clouds and heard them saying, ‘Hurry up, Shawnadithit. Hurry up. We want to come back.’ And then they turned into grandmother warning me, and she said, ‘Wash the venison quickly, Ditti. Aich-mud-yim is at the river and he is in a very black mood today.’
