Frankenstein 4-Week Assessment | Tests, Literary Analysis & Reading Comprehension Grades 9–12
Assess Frankenstein with questions that measure more than whether students simply finished the reading.
This comprehensive 4-week Frankenstein assessment resource for Mary Shelley’s classic novel gives high school ELA teachers ready-to-use weekly assessments that measure reading comprehension, literary analysis, critical thinking, writing, character development, theme, author’s craft, and textual evidence.
Designed for Grades 9–12, the resource progresses through Letters 1–4 and Chapters 1–24, allowing teachers to assess student understanding throughout the novel rather than relying on one test at the end.

Each weekly assessment contains:
- 20 multiple-choice questions
- 3 short-response questions
- 2 extended-response questions
- Reading comprehension and analysis
- Character development
- Theme analysis
- Author’s craft
- Perspective and point of view
- Textual evidence
- Critical thinking
- Literary analysis writing
- Detailed answer keys
- Sample responses for constructed-response questions
- Common Core alignment for Grades 9–12
The assessments are organized into four sections of the novel:
Week 1: Letters 1–4 & Chapters 1–4
Week 2: Chapters 5–12
Week 3: Chapters 13–20
Week 4: Chapters 21–24
The questions move intentionally from comprehension into deeper analysis. Students examine the parallels between Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein, Victor’s growing obsession with scientific discovery, Shelley’s use of foreshadowing and Gothic imagery, and the relationship between ambition and responsibility.
As the novel progresses, students analyze Victor’s responsibility for his creation, justice and innocence, the creature’s perspective, appearance versus reality, rejection and isolation, nature versus nurture, revenge, morality, and the consequences of unchecked ambition.
The resource also asks students to wrestle with some of the novel’s biggest questions: What responsibility does a creator have for what they create? How does rejection shape identity? Can ambition exist without accountability?
And what does it really mean to be human?
