This Four-part video guide to the capital city of Catalonia covers several aspects of this enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture and a world-class drinking and dining scene.
We experience the Autumn festival of La Merce in Barcelona; seeing human towers formed by the “castellers” , and the “giants” paraded through the city, concluding with fireworks and the colourful display of the “Magic Fountain”.
A separate video focuses on the extraordinary works of the Barcelona architect Antonio Gaudi, whose creations are found through the city with the highlight being the cathedral of La Sagrada Familia.
Unesco-listed La Sagrada Família inspires awe by its sheer verticality, and in the manner of the medieval cathedrals it emulates, it’s still under construction. Work began in 1882 and is hoped to be completed in 2026, a century after the architect’s death. Unfinished it may be, but the cathedral attracts more than 4.5 million visitors a year and is the most visited monument in Spain.
Barcelona‘s Winter Festival of Santa Eulàlia is not one of its most famous, even though it’s one of the best. Celebrating the young saint of Eulàlia, it combines many Catalan traditions, a light festival and folklore.
