Proportion City: Real-World Proportional Reasoning Project is an engaging, hands-on math project that helps students apply ratios, proportions, and proportional relationships to authentic city-planning situations. Students become city planners, solve 10 real-world proportion challenges, make construction and budget decisions, design their own city, and explain their mathematical reasoning.

This resource is helpful for educators because it provides a ready-to-use, low-prep project that turns proportional reasoning into a meaningful real-world experience. It can be used for math centers, project-based learning, enrichment, review, or as an end-of-unit activity. Students practice both single-step and multistep proportional problems while developing problem-solving, budgeting, decision-making, and communication skills.

The flexible format allows teachers to have students draw and design their own city or use the optional building cards for additional structure. The included budget tracker, construction recording sheet, reflection questions, answer key, and extension activity make it easy to implement in the classroom.

Standards Alignment

CCSS – Grade 7

  • 7.RP.A.1 – Compute unit rates associated with ratios, including different units.
  • 7.RP.A.2 – Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
  • 7.RP.A.3 – Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
  • 7.EE.B.3 – Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems involving rational numbers, including financial contexts.

TEKS – Grade 7

  • 7.4(A) – Represent constant rates of change in mathematical and real-world problems using various representations.
  • 7.4(B) – Calculate unit rates and use proportional relationships in mathematical and real-world situations.
  • 7.4(C) – Determine the constant of proportionality in mathematical and real-world problems.
  • 7.4(D) – Solve problems involving ratios, rates, and percents, including multistep and financial literacy problems.

VDOE – Virginia Grade 7

  • 2023 SOL 7.CE.2 – Solve problems, including those in context, involving proportional relationships. This includes creating and using ratio tables, writing and solving proportions, and applying proportional reasoning to contextual problems.
  • 2016 SOL 7.3 – Solve single-step and multistep practical problems using proportional reasoning. This is an especially direct match to the project's stated Standard of Learning.
