R. A. Nicholson was one of the twentieth century's most serious scholars of Islamic mysticism, and this 1921 study is one of his best: three close portraits of figures who rarely get this kind of attention in English. There's Abu Sa'id, the ecstatic Persian mystic; Al-Jili, the metaphysician working out some of Sufism's hardest ideas; and Ibn al-Farid, the Egyptian poet-mystic, whose great mystical Odes are translated here in full alongside Nicholson's commentary.

This isn't a light introduction. It's a rigorous, readable scholarly study for anyone who wants to go past the popular Rumi anthologies and into the actual intellectual history of the tradition.
