Spring Butterfly Art Project Butterfly Drawing Lesson Easy Spring Art Activity
This Spring Butterfly on a Flower Art Project teaches students to draw a butterfly step by step and explore the wax resist technique with crayons and watercolor paint. Students create a vibrant spring scene of a butterfly resting on a flower while learning about color, value, texture and creative design.
Students experiment with bold color choices and their own butterfly wing patterns, then watch the wax resist appear as the paint flows around their crayon lines. The finished artwork is bright and colorful, and it makes a lovely spring hallway display or bulletin board.
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING
★★★★★ “During our state testing my grade level team realized our kids needed a brain break, and this activity was perfect! It gave step by step instructions so clearly, even I could do it and I’m not artist! My kids loved it and have already been begging to do another art project just like this! Definitely recommend.” Paige S.

HOW TO USE IT
Students start by drawing a butterfly with wings, antennae and body shapes using simple guided steps, then draw a large flower beneath it and add creative patterns inside the wings. Next they outline with black marker or felt pen and add crayon color and value shading.
Finally, they paint the background with watercolor, paint cakes or watered-down tempera paint. The crayon lines repel the paint and stay bold, creating the wax resist effect. The lesson suits elementary art classes, seasonal art, homeschool art, sub plans, spring units and nature or insect themes.
