STRANGERS – As Were All Our Fathers by Bro H

[Verse 1] Yahweh told Abram: “Your seed shall be a stranger In a land that is not theirs. They shall serve and suffer affliction; I will judge the nation they serve, And afterward they shall come out With great possessions.” Abraham sojourned in Gerar And in the Philistines’ land; At Beersheba he called upon The name of the everlasting God. When famine came in Isaac’s days, Yahweh told him not to go to Egypt, But to sojourn in Gerar under His blessing And to perform the oath He swore to Abraham. Isaac then gave Jacob the blessing of Abraham, That he and his seed might inherit The land wherein he sojourned. [Chorus] Strangers and pilgrims—so were all our fathers, Heirs of the promise, awaiting fulfillment; They saw the promises afar off and embraced them, And confessed they were strangers upon the earth. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob lived as sojourners; Israel in Egypt was a stranger in the land. But He would lead them out by His mighty hand; The covenant He swore would surely stand. [Verse 2] Jacob dwelt where Isaac had sojourned Until famine brought his house into Egypt. “To sojourn in this land are we come; Let your servants dwell in Goshen.” Jacob described his years before Pharaoh As the years of his pilgrimage. Israel multiplied in Egypt, But a new Pharaoh brought them into bondage. Moses fled into Midian and named his son Gershom: “I have been a stranger In a foreign land.” Yahweh heard Israel’s groaning, Remembered Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, And sent Moses back to bring His people out. “I will bring you out from under Egypt’s burdens, Deliver you from bondage, Redeem you with an outstretched arm, And take you to Me for a people.” “Do not mistreat or oppress a sojourner, For you were sojourners in Egypt.” [Verse 3] Elimelech and Naomi left Bethlehem in famine To sojourn in Moab with their sons. Elimelech died; the sons married Ruth and Orpah; Then Mahlon and Chilion also died. Naomi returned to Bethlehem with Ruth. Ruth gleaned within the field of Boaz: “Why have I found grace in your sight, Seeing I am a stranger?” Boaz was a near kinsman. He redeemed Elimelech’s inheritance And took Ruth as Mahlon’s widow, So the dead man’s name would remain among his brethren. Ruth bore Obed, the father of Jesse; Jesse became the father of David. “We are strangers before You, And sojourners, as were all our fathers. Our days upon the earth are like a shadow, And there is none abiding.” [David’s Psalm] “Hear my prayer, O Yahweh; Do not be silent at my tears. I am a stranger with You, and a sojourner, As all my fathers were.” [Verse 4] At Pentecost, there were gathered at Jerusalem, Judaeans—devout men out of every nation under heaven. Peter cried, “You men of Israel,” And, “Let all the house of Israel know.” “The promise is unto you and your children, And to all who are afar off, Even as many as Yahweh our God Shall call unto Himself.” Those once apart from Jesus Christ, Alienated from Israel’s commonwealth And strangers from the covenants of promise, Were brought near by the blood of Christ. No longer strangers and sojourners, But fellow citizens with the saints; Members of the household of God, Built together upon the Cornerstone. [Verse 5] Those alienated through wicked works Were reconciled through Christ’s death, To be presented holy in His sight If they continued grounded in The Faith. Peter wrote to chosen sojourners Scattered throughout the provinces: “You are a chosen generation, A royal priesthood, a holy nation, A peculiar and treasured people, Called from darkness into marvelous light.” “As strangers and pilgrims, abstain from lusts; Keep honorable conduct among the nations.” [Closing] Let brotherly love continue; Do not neglect hospitality. Some received messengers without knowing it. [Final Refrain] From the fathers who sojourned To their children scattered far, The strangers and pilgrims of the Old Testament And those addressed by the apostles. Are the same people— Israelites. Remember who you are.
