Jane Austen Prayers - EBOOK (Digital File)
For the first time you can read the original prayers Jane Austen wrote in her beautiful neat handwriting over 200 years ago - in print for the first time!
‘Prayers composed by my ever dear sister Jane’ is written on the outside fold of the prayers written by Jane Austen and treasured by her sister Cassandra until her death. They are beautiful, and heartfelt, and remind us that Jane embraced the Christian faith and was a deeply religious person and devoted to God.
In Mansfield Park, Fanny Price talks of morning and evening prayers at Sotherton, ‘A whole family assembling regularly for the purpose of prayer is fine!’
Jane wrote the prayers throughout the day and to her family in the evenings. They were copied out from the Austen family bible, and are small enough to fit into a pocket and read by candle light.
It was part of the Austen family daily life, and on a Sunday night in 1808 Jane says in a letter to Cassandra, ‘In the evening we had the Psalms and Lessons, and a sermon at home.’
Jane Austen's Prayers is a beautifully illustrated book filled with the original manuscripts and accompanying text, unseen photographs of the Marriage Register Jane scribbled in, family photographs, her topaz cross and other Jane Austen treasures.
Emma Darlington introduces us to Jane's prayers and delves deeper into her faith, explains how her upbringing surrounded by clergymen inspired the characters in her novels, and how she lived a life devoted to her family and to God.
