In this Winter Snowman Art Project, students create a snowman painting in a cozy winter scene using oil pastels and paint. It is a festive mixed media lesson for the winter season and the lead-up to Christmas.

The finished snowmen make a cheerful bulletin board display. Students start with an easy drawing handout, add a painted snowy background, then bring the snowman to life with oil pastel color and detail.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “It was so easy to use. The students did the whole activity in a morning! I used large paper for the background, to fill up empty bulletin boards in the hallway. It brought the walls to life!” Sue T.

HOW TO USE IT

Review the lesson plan and gather your materials in advance: pencil and eraser, a black felt pen for outlining, tempera or watercolor paint cakes for the snowy background, oil pastels for color and detail, cardstock or watercolor paper, and a paintbrush and water. Photocopy the drawing handout, rubrics and student project reflection.

Show the finished example before you start to get students excited. Then project the step-by-step guide on a digital projector or document camera, or use it as your own guide for a demo. Finish with the rubric, the student/teacher assessment and the reflection.
