Structured Literacy Spelling & Writing Curriculum: RMS Level 2
Reading Made Simple Level 2: Spelling to Sentences — A Structured Writing Curriculum
This level follows Reading Made Simple Level 1.
Level 2 teaches spelling through 54 word families. Each week introduces one new sound and a family of words built on it — then the following week's dictation passage is written using those new words alongside previously taught words.
Reduced mental overload along with constant review = success!
No sound is ever practised once and dropped; the weekly dictations quietly revise as many words as possible, so a pupil's spelling doesn't just grow — it compounds.
Over 54 lessons, this takes a pupil from a spelling age of 6 to at least 9, revisiting everything from Level 1, adding the consonant blend families pupils typically find hardest, along with more multisyllable words and suffixes ing/ed/y/le/ly/tion, and building outward into full sentence writing — punctuation, capital letters, and grammar taught without technical terms at this stage to avoid mental overload.
More than spelling — this course teaches sentences, grammar, and punctuation, turning spellers into writers!
Because it opens by consolidating Level 1's word families before adding new ones, it works as a next step or a stand-alone start, and suits any pupil at this stage — young learner, dyslexic pupil, homeschooler, or ESL/EFL student alike
Don't need Level 1 first: a placement test finds the right lesson to start at, so an older or more able pupil can begin directly in Level 2.
What's included:
- Teacher's Manual — 54 lesson plans, teaching notes, and word lists
- Word Lists in A4 poster format
- 54 double-sided worksheets covering spelling, grammar, writing, and reading
How each worksheet builds toward writing:
- Tracking (spotting the new sound in a passage built only from taught words), Comprehension & language exercises (grammar and meaning together), Questions (answered using only known vocabulary),
- Labelling (including plurals), and
- Be the Teacher (proofreading and self-correction).
Because every passage uses only previously taught vocabulary, a weaker reader also gets genuine graded reading practice throughout — though the programme's core purpose remains spelling, grammar, and writing.
This is Level 2 of the four-level Reading Made Simple series, built for pupils for whom other programmes haven't worked.
Take the placement test, find your child's starting point — and by the end, watch their spelling age reach at least 9, and their writing become confident and correctly punctuated.
