Rakuyou (pronounced rak-oo-YO) is a Japanese word meaning fallen or shedded leaves. The Rakuyou Shawlette is a wide, shallow piece which is highly textured with Japanese lace and twisted stitches. Working from the top down with increases at each end of every right side row keeps the lace design uninterrupted. The final piece has almost a mustache shape, so the center back can be worn flat or folded as a mini collar at the nape of the neck. The shawlette uses less than 400 yd (366 m) of yarn, making it perfect for one special skein. The yarn shown in the sample is Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Glitter Sock, colorway “Teak.”

Gauge is not critical, but changes may result in more yarn being needed. Use any yarn with appropriate needles. Instructions are both written and charted.

Skills needed: Following a stitch pattern, lace. Most patterning occurs on right side rows, but some of the stitches are complicated, including double and triple decreases. Recommended for intermediate to experienced knitters.
