This Kindergarten Picasso Kitty Art Project is a colorful Pablo Picasso art lesson for primary students. Students create a kitty inspired by Picasso, with a patterned painted background and a layered cat face built from simple shapes, while exploring pattern, shape, line, color and creative thinking.

Students use oil pastel and watercolor paint, then cut and glue the face pieces together. Because the pieces overlap, every kitty turns out a little different, with bright eyes and patterned sections. It suits kindergarten to grade 3, primary art, cat art and artist study, for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers.

HOW TO USE IT

Students start by dividing the background into sections and filling each one with different lines and patterns. Then they build the kitty face with big, simple shapes, paint, cut and glue. The steps keep the process manageable for young students while the finished art still looks bold and different from one child to the next.

The poem and reading page introduce who Picasso was, how he used his imagination and made art in bold, unusual ways, and the idea of Cubism in a kid-friendly way. The finished kitties make a bright bulletin board or hallway display.
