On August 11th, 1973, DJ Kool Herc threw a back to school jam with his sister Cindy. He was just 18 years old at the time - and he decided to do something new by extending the breaks on the vinyl records he was mixing. He and his friend Coke La Rock did shout outs and Mcing over the breaks - and this day in history is now considered the birth of hip-hop. As these parties continued, they brought together dancers (who danced to the breaks becoming breakdancers!), graffiti artists, rappers/MCs and DJs who used 2 turntables to switch between breaks giving the rappers and MCs an unbroken beat to speak over with no vocals on it.

Available in A4 and A3, these framed prints are part of my 'printed sketchbook' collection - a series of prints available for one month only, taken directly from the sketchbooks that I've filled up the month before. Raw, unfiltered, unpredictable and even unfinished - these artworks often show pencil marks, gridlines, mistakes, cut off edges, and even paper folds....as they offer an insight into my process and development that month, and a glimpse behind the curtains of my practice and what I'm currently working on.
