The schooner Transport out of Norfolk lands 184 people on thirteen shipper sheets, and her papers reconcile to the person: her certificate says 181, her sheets name 182 numbered entries — minus Bowlin, 23, left on shore at Norfolk "being sick" — and two infants ride unnumbered on their mothers' lines. Another of her children is entered only as Milly's infant, two months old, with "Died at Sea" in the margin.
The brig Comet out of Alexandria is Franklin & Armfield's own: John Armfield ships 57 people to Isaac Franklin at New Orleans, and 111 ride in all. Patsy, 11, "died at Sea" — the master's oath, the manifest, and the inspector's endorsement all carry her the same way.
The Magnolia out of Mobile carries Austin Woolfolk's 46, most of the men under full surnames — Marshall, Blocker, Foster, McLean, Mason, Brooks, Walker, Henderson, Danforth, Dunbar, Bugg, Hill, Williams. Against Spencer McLean, 23, one word is written: "lost."
Also in these pages: Henry, 11, struck through on the Exit — "One being Sold after clearance"; Simon, 30, and Jackson, 15, each written twice into the Splendid's manifest; the Dumfries' dead infant, entered only as "Infant"; Nelly, classed as "House Servant," travelling with her four-month-old Robbin; Sally, 12, alone on the Amelia.
Every entry gives the name as written, sex, age, height, class as written, shipper or owner, and residence, vessel by vessel, with an alphabetical index. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — disagreements and all. The free guide and the Complete Set download hold the guide and every installment so far in one file.
