HJR 192, passed in 1933, made it legal to pay debts with any type of US currency, not just gold. This resolution also prohibited the inclusion of "gold clauses" in contracts.
The US Code section that covers the payment of government obligations and interest on the public debt is 31 U.S.C. § 3123. This section is part of Title 31, which covers money and finance.
