Al-Ghazali was the most celebrated teacher of his age when he lost the ability to speak in front of his students. Known in Arabic as al-Munqidh min al-Dalal, Deliverance from Error, this is his own account of what followed: the collapse of his certainty, his abandonment of a prestigious chair in Baghdad, years of wandering and ascetic withdrawal, and the route by which he came back to conviction. It is one of the founding texts of spiritual autobiography, and it is short enough to read in an evening.

This edition is Claud Field's 1909 English translation, prepared fresh by Hidden Lantern Press with corrected text and clean typesetting for e-readers. It runs to 70 pages in print.
