Royal Navy Black Caps

The iconic black caps of the Royal Navy, in service throughout the 19th Century and early 20th Century. The Royal Navy commissioned black caps at the later period of the 19th Century with the use of steam engines, the black colouring was to hide the dirt on the uniforms which was viewed as insult to senior officers.

The Royal Navy de-commissioned the black caps until recently re-commissioned and used within the Submarine Service.
