Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health condition that can affect men and women after giving birth. It's a mood disorder that can cause symptoms like:
Extreme sadness
Low energy
Anxiety
Crying episodes
Irritability
Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
Withdrawing from friends and family
Thoughts of harming the baby or yourself
PPD usually begins within the first month after birth and can last for months or longer if left untreated. Symptoms are usually severe and can make it difficult to carry out daily tasks, including caring for yourself or others.
Some things that may contribute to PPD include:
A dramatic drop in estrogen and progesterone after giving birth
Other hormones produced by the thyroid gland that may also drop sharply
Sleep deprivation
Anxiety about your ability to care for a newborn
Self-image issues, such as feeling less attractive or struggling with your sense of identity
A medical professional can diagnose and treat PPD. Treatment can include counseling, antidepressants, or hormone therapy. You can also try these things to help:
Get as much rest as you can
Accept help from family and friends
Connect with other new moms
Create time to take care of yourself
Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs, which can make mood swings worse
