Finding the Names — Installment 69 (Roll 8, 1840–1841) — FREE
Installment 69 of Finding the Names, Volume One — The Ship Manifests. Transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans of the original New Orleans inward manifests: Record Group 36, Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 8 ("Inward Manifests, 1837–1841," NAID 173898130), images 841–960.
474 entries (468 named, 6 unnamed) on 62 documents, dated December 1840 to June 1841.
Inside: John, about 13, shipped by the U.S. Army quartermaster at Cedar Keys because there was no custom house officer there — his certificate is his whole record; the brig Saratoga's five, removed after her clearance while her certificate still counts "Six"; Robert Jones, who died on the brig Orleans's passage; George, Jane, and Matilda, landed at the mouth of Pearl River and never brought to New Orleans; Maryland's term-service oaths on the Splendid and the Tippecanoe (spelled four ways on her own papers); and Zeline alias Felix, 15, alone on the Slatter barque under yet another spelling.
Contents: the book (135 pages, PDF, large print) — About, art by an enslaved creator, the manifests voyage by voyage, the unnamed, an alphabetical name index with image numbers, and honest notes on gaps and disagreements.
