The Narrative Rewrite
The Narrative Rewrite is the third booklet in a series by Neil Nelson. It focuses on identifying and updating an individual's "Narrative"—the internal script that dictates personal capability and reactions to life events.
The Core Concepts
- The Master Blueprint: An individual’s narrative functions as a master blueprint for their life. If this script contains fundamental errors or is outdated, the individual must transition from playing the lead role to becoming the "Editor".
- The Audit Process: To update the narrative, the reader is encouraged to act as an objective observer, separate facts from feelings, and use a "red pen" approach to replace unproductive thoughts. This process is focused on accurate thinking rather than mere positive thinking.
The booklet provides ten questions to help identify and rewrite limiting beliefs, including:
- Default Settings: Identifying the source of automatic negative thoughts.
- The Expert Trap: Overcoming the fear of being a beginner to facilitate growth.
- Labels Audit: Assessing if long-held labels now act as cages.
- Evidence Test: Challenging limiting beliefs by recalling past successes.
- Comparison & Resilience: Calibrating self-perception by recognising unique strengths and leveraging past resilience.
The reader is encouraged to retire specific internal phrases and replace them with more accurate truths, such as replacing "I am" with "I am learning to," and "I should" with "I choose to".
