TA-REV-006 — Theme Reviewing, Refinement, Coherence, Distinctiveness and Negative or Discordant Evidence
Description
This Master Prompt would focus on critically reviewing candidate themes and determining whether they provide a coherent, distinctive and evidence-supported representation of the dataset. It would guide researchers in reviewing coded extracts within themes, examining themes against the complete dataset, merging overlapping themes, splitting excessively broad themes, removing unsupported themes, revising boundaries, reconsidering subthemes and testing whether each theme meaningfully contributes to answering the research question.
A major emphasis would be placed on analytic tension and discordance rather than forcing all evidence into a neat thematic structure. Researchers would actively search for negative cases, contradictory accounts, minority perspectives, contextual variations and evidence that challenges dominant interpretations. Themes would therefore be treated as provisional analytical constructions requiring repeated interrogation rather than findings that become fixed once initially generated. This reflects approaches in the uploaded literature that explicitly incorporate engagement with discordant data and analytic tensions as mechanisms for strengthening interpretive rigor. RRITA, for example, embeds systematic engagement with discordant data, analytic tensions, theme warrants, thematic maps and a versioned matrix trail so that coherence and changes in interpretation remain visible throughout the analysis.
