Hab is a rocky world of 1.4 standard masses locked face-on to a dim orange star called Sub. One hemisphere bakes at 340 kelvin under a permanent noon; the far side freezes at 130 kelvin under a permanent night; and between them runs a ring of terminator country roughly 210 kilometers wide, where the temperature sits between 268 and 291 kelvin and human lungs can work. This ring is called the Sill. It is 39,000 kilometers around and it is the only real estate in the system. Everything the settlers built in the four centuries since the seed-ships arrived is strung along it like beads on a wire — 41 chartered cities, 900-odd unchartered camps, and the Belt Road that connects them.
