Helping professionals frequently work in environments characterized by trauma exposure, crisis response, emotional labor, and systemic challenges. While this work can be meaningful and rewarding, it can also carry significant emotional, physical, and professional consequences.
Over time, repeated exposure to trauma, suffering, and crisis can contribute to burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. These experiences can impact emotional wellbeing, workplace relationships, professional effectiveness, job satisfaction, and long-term sustainability within helping professions.
The Cost of Caring: Vicarious Trauma, Burnout, & Sustainable Advocacy is a trauma-informed professional development training designed to help participants better understand the impact of trauma exposure while exploring practical strategies that support workforce wellness, organizational accountability, and sustainable advocacy.
This training moves beyond the idea that burnout is simply an individual problem and examines the important role that workplace culture, supervision, workload, staffing, and organizational practices play in supporting—or undermining—professional wellbeing.
Through education, reflection, and practical application, participants will gain tools to recognize warning signs, understand the impact of trauma on both individuals and systems, and develop strategies that support long-term sustainability.
