Emil Nolde was born on August 7, 1867 in the town of Nolde, a few kilometers from Tonder, and was the fourth of five children in the family. Until 1920, this territory was part of Prussia and thus the North German Union. After the transfer the territory of Denmark, Nolde obtained the citizenship of Denmark, which he retained for the rest of his life. His father, by nationality, was a Northern frieze.
