THE TEXTURE LAB™ 005 — THE CITY STREET | Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo
THE TEXTURE LAB™ 005 — THE CITY STREET
Creative Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo | Grades 7–8
🏙️ ONE CITY STREET. FOUR MATERIALS. ENDLESS CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES!
Can your learners bring an ordinary city street to life using nothing but pencil strokes?
Welcome to The Texture Lab™, where simple outlines become extraordinary opportunities for artistic discovery!
In File 005 — The City Street, learners become urban texture artists as they transform a city street illustration into a detailed artwork filled with contrasting surfaces, patterns and shading.
From rough brick walls and reflective glass to weathered concrete and smooth metal, every surface presents a new artistic challenge!
THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE
Learners investigate how different pencil marks can represent:
- Brick: Repeated rectangular patterns, rough surfaces and shaded mortar lines.
- Glass: Light shading, reflections and carefully placed highlights.
- Concrete: Stippling, irregular marks and subtle shading to suggest rough surfaces.
- Metal: Smooth tonal changes, straight lines and darker shading to create depth.
Learners are encouraged to experiment with six mark-making techniques:
Hatching • Cross-hatching • Stippling • Scribbling • Contour Lines • Repeated Patterns
