You can't learn to build a handpan from a video. You learn it at the workbench — and most people learn it by ruining shells. This guide is the map we wish we'd had: every stage of the build, in order, with the decisions that matter and the mistakes that cost the most.

What's inside — over 120 pages, 15 parts, 12 appendices

  • Understanding the instrument — how a note works: the fundamental, the octave and the compound fifth, and where each one lives on the note.
  • Safety and the workshop — noise, fumes, heat, and how to set up a space you can actually work in.
  • Tools and equipment — what you need, what each tool is for, and what you can build yourself: compressor, pneumatic hammers, press, the heavy stand and the precision tuning stand, tuning hammers, kiln or torch.
  • Materials — nitrided DC04, stainless 410 and 430, Ember Steel: how each one behaves under the hammer and how it sounds.
  • Planning — shell size, scale, layout and magnetic templates, before you touch the metal.
  • Shell preparation — the Gu, the ding, the dimples, pressing and its limits.
  • Sinking — bringing the notes out of the metal with the pneumatic hammer, step by step.
  • Annealing — relieving the metal with a kiln or a torch, and the temperature you must never exceed.
  • Tuning — tension, the working point, isolating each partial, and how the notes talk to each other.
  • Gluing, final tuning and finishing — joining the two shells, tuning from inside through the Gu, cleaning the rim, oiling.
  • Care and maintenance — keeping the instrument alive for years.
  • 14 common mistakes — what goes wrong, why it matters, and how to avoid it.
  • 12 appendices — a roadmap for complete beginners, a glossary, ear training, a "what went wrong?" index, how scales work, an atlas of eight common scales, frequency and conversion tables, and printable build and tuning sheets.

Who it's for

  • Makers and metalworkers who want to build their first handpan the right way.
  • Players who want to understand their instrument from the inside.
  • Beginner builders who are tired of piecing the process together from forum posts.

What it is not

A shortcut. No guide replaces the hours at the workbench — this one makes them count. It's a self-study guide: we don't follow individual builds by email.

Questions

Do I need a hydraulic press and a kiln?

No. The guide explains what each one does and the cheaper alternative for each: annealing with a torch, forming by hand. You pay for those savings in time and effort, and the guide tells you how much.

Is this for complete beginners?

It's written so a beginner can follow it, but building a handpan is hard. Read the free guide "Before You Build Your First Handpan" first: if it makes you more eager, not less, this guide is for you.

Inside, Appendix A gives you a step-by-step roadmap for where to start.

Can I ask you questions after I buy?
