A stress-free pattern for cuff-down aran/worsted weight hiking socks — though they also make excellent slipper/lounging socks for toasty toes at home.

The two-row pattern repeat is easy to memorise and suitable for a beginner sock knitter with some experience of knitting in the round. Guidance is included for both DPN and magic loop methods.

Knitted in aran weight yarn with added nylon, these are long-lasting boot socks that also knit up quickly — perfect for a last-minute gift. The ribbed fabric throughout means the socks are stretchy and forgiving for different foot shapes. Leg height and foot length are both easily adjusted as you go.

SIZING Based on foot circumference at the widest part: XS (up to 18cm/7"), S (18–20cm/7–8"), M (20–23cm/8–9"), L (23–26cm/9–10"), XL (26cm/10"+)

MATERIALS

Yarn: 1–2 x 100g balls aran weight sock yarn with added nylon (approx. 199–348m/217–380yds depending on size). Smaller sizes may need only one ball; larger sizes or longer cuffs will need roughly 150–175g. The pattern was designed using Novita 7 Veljesta.

Alternative yarns: Any aran weight sock yarn with added nylon. Wool-based is preferable for breathability. For indoor socks, any regular aran weight yarn works, though it won't stand up to heavy wear.

Needles: 4mm DPNs or circular needle (or size needed for correct gauge), plus the next size up for casting on.

GAUGE

22 sts and 28 rows over 10cm/4" in stockinette. Row count isn't crucial as length is adjustable, but getting the stitch count right is important for fit — adjust needle size as needed.
