The Woman at the Crossing
A short, spooky Thai ghost story inspired by traditional Thai folklore, designed to help you make the leap from studying the Thai writing system to actually reading Thai.
The Woman at the Crossing (ผู้หญิงที่ทางม้าลาย) is a Level 1 (L1) title in the Start Reading Thai series and the first instalment in our new Thai Ghost Stories collection. It is intended for learners who already know the basics of Thai script — including consonants, vowels and tone markers — but are still building confidence reading complete sentences and natural Thai. The story is presented entirely in Thai script, without transliteration, so you can practise recognising words and patterns directly on the page.
The story follows James, a British English teacher living in Bangkok. One evening, while walking home, he encounters a mysterious woman dressed in white standing beside a pedestrian crossing. She asks him to help her cross the road, but before he can do anything, she suddenly disappears.
When James sees her again the following evening, things become even stranger. She somehow knows his name, and her hand is as cold as ice. A local shopkeeper eventually reveals that the woman died in a traffic accident at the crossing two years earlier.
Despite being warned to stay away, James finds himself drawn back to the crossing. But what does the mysterious woman really want from him? And why does she keep asking him to help her cross the road?
Along the way, you'll encounter practical vocabulary connected with city life, roads and transport, movement and directions, appearance, feelings, everyday conversations and mysterious events. The accompanying vocabulary section also introduces useful expressions and common story language, helping you build vocabulary you can recognise outside the book too.
Discover Thai Ghost Stories
Ghost stories are an important part of Thai popular culture, drawing on a rich tradition of supernatural beliefs, local legends and folklore. From mysterious spirits haunting roads and buildings to ghosts associated with particular places, objects and trees, the supernatural has long captured the Thai imagination. These traditions continue to inspire countless films, television series, novels and other forms of entertainment.
The Woman at the Crossing draws inspiration from the Thai belief in ผีตายโหง (Phi Tai Hong) — restless spirits of people who have died suddenly or violently. According to traditional beliefs, such spirits may remain close to the places where they died, sometimes posing a danger to the living.
For Thai learners, exploring these stories in their original language offers a fascinating glimpse into Thai culture. However, jumping straight into a native Thai horror novel can be a daunting prospect. The Woman at the Crossing offers a much gentler introduction.
With its simple language, short sentences, familiar everyday situations and gradually building suspense, this Level 1 story is designed to be accessible even to learners who are just beginning to read connected Thai text.
If you already enjoy ghost stories, it's a chance to experience a distinctly Thai take on the supernatural while developing your reading skills. And if you're curious about Thailand's rich world of ghosts and superstitions, this could be your first step into a fascinating and sometimes terrifying side of Thai culture.
