This Winter Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with sentence writing practice for K to 2 students. On each page, students draw a winter picture, trace and write the word, trace and write a simple sentence, and then write their own sentence using the word.

Drawing first gives young writers something real to talk and write about. The drawings follow winter themes: snowflake, ice skate, hot chocolate mug, mitten, snowman, pinecone, snowy tree, penguin, winter coat, snow globe, walrus, snowy owl, polar bear, caribou, seal, penguin chick, narwhal, mouse, fox, cardinal, mountain, snowball, hat, scarf and candle.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or staple the set into a winter booklet that students work through over time.

Every page follows the same format, so students get repeated practice and know what to expect. It suits visual learners and reluctant writers especially well, because the drawing gives them a starting point before the writing.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with K to 2 students.

What kind of writing does it support?

Sentence writing. Students trace and write a themed word, trace and write a simple sentence, and write their own sentence using the word.

How long does each page take?

It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. One page may fit in one class or writing block, and students who color carefully may take longer.

Is it editable?

No. It is a non-editable PDF.

Do students need to be strong artists?

No. The drawing steps are there so every student can succeed, and they can add their own details once they finish.

What skills does it support?

Sentence writing, handwriting, vocabulary, drawing confidence, fine motor skills, visual literacy, written expression and art-to-literacy connections.

★★ “I liked the resource but the kids didn't seem to go for it! It could be how I introduced and taught concepts as well! I will try it again next year!” Melanie F.
