One of the most exciting (and slightly nerve-wracking) things about bodies of water is all the out-of-sight creatures hiding under the waves, nestled under the shadow of the rocks, or buried in the sand. Hermit crabs, chitons, sea slugs, and countless other creatures could be anywhere - the water and shores are brimming with life! This slouchy hat pays tribute to the textures and shapes of these fascinating beings. Simple increases and decreases as well as modified nupp stitches create an all-over, thick lace that decreases to a beautiful star-like design at the crown. This hat has a LOT of potential stretch, but blocking is essential to highlight the lace stitches and to create enough drape for a slouchy shape.

YARN: Approx. 175 (210, 235) yds / 160 (192, 215) m of worsted weight yarn. I was so grateful to collaborate with Subculture Yarn on this design, and I highly recommend her Subculture Yarn SW Merino Worsted (100% Superwash Merino; 250 yds / 229 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g per skein)! The samples are shown in colorways “Swamp Queen” and “Purple Starfish.”

SIZES: 1 (2, 3)
Brim circumference (unstretched): 13.6 (15.2, 16.8)“ / 35 (39, 43) cm

Height: 7 (8, 9)“ / 18 (20, 23) cm
This hat has a LOT of stretch. The model has a head circumference of approximately 23.5” / 60 cm at the widest point, and she’s wearing a Size 3 hat with plenty of room.

Brim: Approx. 20 sts / 28 rounds to 4” / 10 cm in k2, p2 ribbing
Body: Gauge will vary based on how aggressively hat is blocked; the hat sample has a gauge of approximately 18 sts / 25 rounds to 4” / 10 cm in lace pattern

4.5 mm / US 7 size circular needles, or whatever size attains gauge.
4.0 mm / US 6 size circular needles, or one size down from gauge needles
