This Spring Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for grade 2 to 5 students. On each page, students follow a simple directed drawing, create a spring illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

Drawing first means students are not starting from a blank page. They have something visual and personal to describe, explain, imagine or turn into a short written response. The drawings follow spring themes: flower, seedling, chick, frog, robin, caterpillar, butterfly, slug, snail, duckling, tadpole, hummingbird, sheep, pond, rain cloud, carrot, beet, dragonfly, branch, strawberry, rabbit, pig, nest and daffodil.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for daily writing practice, morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a spring write and draw booklet that students work through over time.

Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students feel ownership over it. They can write about what they made, add details, describe a setting or imagine a character. It is especially helpful for reluctant writers, visual learners and students who benefit from a drawing prompt before writing.
