The best time to make and wear beautiful hand-knits is during the darkest days and the longest nights of mid-winter. Gaze upwards on a cold, clear evening, and you might be rewarded with the luminescence of the winter sky. The Starlit Night mitts are part of the Mid-Winter Knits collection, a collaborative project with Aroha Knits. Four designs are inspired by the practice of stargazing at Matariki, the Maori New Year, which falls on the Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice.

Silver mohair stars twinkle on a background of rich hand-dyed Merino wool, a constellation in your hand. The luxurious fibres knit into a sumptuous fabric, a delight to knit and wear. An afterthought thumb construction allows the stitch pattern to continue uninterrupted through the hand. I-Cord Bind-Off completes the trim.

The STARLIT NIGHT mitts pattern features:
  • Slipped-stitch colourwork pattern
  • Combining and mohair/silk and superwash merino for texture
  • Afterthought thumb
Mitten circumference: 15 (18, 21)cm/6 (7, 8 1/4)”
Mitten length: 20.5 (21.5, 22.5)cm/8 3/4 (9 1/4, 9 1/2)“

The Starlit Night mitts combine 3 different yarns to create a beautiful fabric that really shows off the different fibres.

Yarn A: approx 90 (105, 135)m/98 (115, 148)yd DK/light worsted-weight superwash Merino wool, in a tonal hand-dyed shade.
The Urban Purl Wonderful Worsted (100% Superwash Merino wool, 230m/251yd per 115g hank)
2 hanks in shade 10,000 Leagues

Yarn B: approx 85 (100, 130)m/93 (109, 142)yd laceweight Mohair/silk blend yarn, in a shade which is tonally similar to Yarn A but of a different hue, to create a subtle marled effect.
Ito Sensai (60% Mohair, 40% silk, 240m/262yd per
20g ball)
2 balls in shade 0323 Black

Yarn C: approx 55 (65, 85)m/60 (71, 93)yd laceweight Mohair/silk blend yarn, in a shade which contrasts highly with Yarns A & B.
