ASHRIDGE: The land remembers._

1998. It was a hot summer followed by a rainy autumn and a cold Christmas. Things were lost that were never recovered.

Ashridge is an ordinary Wessex market town, just off the ancient path known as the Ridgeway. It has four pubs, a river, a cricket ground, a canal, a pizza takeaway and an Indian Restaurant called the Light of Asia.

But beneath the town lie the Bunkers. Something terrible happened there in the 1970s — two boys went missing and were never found. People in Ashridge (and their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents) have always seen things. They call them the Shinners and try to laugh them off — laugh them off or don't talk about them at all.

But now, Alister Brown, head of English at Ashridge High School, is planning to revive the old Mummers Play with its words like incantations.

Who knows what those incantations will call forth?

And in Ashridge even the little ones in Stepping Stones' Nursery know secrets. Secrets that shouldn't be shared with outsiders.
