THE TEXTURE LAB™ 009 — THE ABANDONED HOUSE

Creative Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo | Grades 7–8

🏚️ ONE ABANDONED HOUSE. FOUR TEXTURES. A THOUSAND UNTOLD STORIES!

Can your learners bring a forgotten building to life using nothing but pencil strokes?

Welcome to The Texture Lab™, where ordinary outlines become extraordinary opportunities for artistic discovery!

In File 009 — The Abandoned House, learners step into a mysterious, forgotten world as they transform an unfinished house illustration into a detailed artwork filled with texture, character and atmosphere.

From splintered wooden boards and crumbling plaster to exposed brickwork and shattered glass, every surface tells a story!

THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE

Learners investigate how different pencil marks can represent:

  • Weathered Wood: Long, irregular lines, hatching and rough patterns to create the appearance of aged timber.
  • Cracked Plaster: Jagged lines, stippling and uneven shading to suggest damaged walls.
  • Exposed Brick: Repeated rectangular patterns, rough surfaces and darker mortar lines.
  • Broken Glass: Sharp angular marks, contrasting tones and carefully placed highlights to suggest shattered surfaces.

Learners are encouraged to experiment with six mark-making techniques:

Hatching • Cross-hatching • Stippling • Scribbling • Contour Lines • Repeated Patterns

WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT

This is more than an ordinary drawing activity!

Learners discover how artists use pencil marks, patterns and shading to communicate the appearance of aged, damaged and weathered materials.

The activity encourages learners to look beyond the outline and consider how texture can create mood, atmosphere and visual interest.

While developing pencil control, observation skills and attention to detail, learners also explore the storytelling possibilities of art.

Every abandoned house has a story. What will your learners create?
